Windows 11 receives another optional patch. With the KB5040527 update, Microsoft is bringing new functions for the taskbar, the Start menu and the file explorer.
Just a few days after Microsoft submitted optional upgrades for Windows 10 and 11 for the month of July, developers are releasing another update tailored to Windows 11. The KB5040527 patch is, as usual, accessible for download through the update settings; but, unlike the previous patch, it has far more functionality.
The KB5040527 update focuses on the taskbar and Start menu, which include new features. In the future, programs from the Start menu’s pinned section can be dragged and dropped onto the taskbar for rapid access. With the new update, users will be able to quickly search for installed programs by pressing [Windows key]+[T].
The file explorer now includes a new function. Right-clicking on an open tab gives you the option to replicate it in the future. However, the introduction of this capability should be approached with caution, since Microsoft cites a number of issues that still need to be addressed in File Explorer. This includes the Explorer crashing during normal use.
The KB5040527 fix updates Windows 11 to build versions 22621.3958 (22H2) and 22631.3958 (23H2) following installation. The download may be started via the Microsoft update feature; Microsoft provides the full release details in the associated blog post. If the download does not operate normally, KB5040527 can be obtained from the Microsoft Update Catalog.
